The first of an exciting series of teleconsultation sessions, this session features leading practitioners examining the key issues in off-shore trading of the Renminbi.

The liberalization of the Renminbi is still a long term process, but the challenges and opportunities it creates for global financial institutions are immediate and real.
Trading of the Renminbi in Asian markets has been weak, except for Hong Kong. How other Asian markets will develop in this Renminbi business remains to be seen.
Several implementation issues are unique to the way in which the Chinese government has ringfenced its domestic market, while it promotes the Hong Kong off-shore market. Standardization issues are also present in the nomenclature (CNY vs CNH) and this remains an open question for as long as there are two markets moving differently.

Learn from industry practitioners as they identity the key issues about the off-shore Renminbi business and present their views on how the Renminbi can be expected to perform in Asian markets. This session is also designed to be an interactive discussion to
identify the operational risks, competitive costs and benefits involved as well as regulatory changes to be anticipated in their decisions to trade in this currency and marketplace.

Key discussion points include but are not limited to the following:

  • What are the latest updates on the off-shore Renminbi business in Hong Kong?
  • Identify the key developments in Chinese policy on the off-shore Renminbi business.
  • What are some of the key activities underway and how is the size and composition of off-shore Renminbi usage?
  • What are some of the technical issues in managing the off-shore Renminbi business?

The session will be conducted through a panel of industry experts who will share their views on these topics and provide direction to the session itself. The panel will comprise of the following leading practitioners from the industry:

  • Peter Zhang, Deputy Director General, Shanghai, CBRC
  • Kuresh Sarjan, Head of Asia Trade & Supply Chain Finance, Bank of America Merrill Lynch
